The most important factor in deciding on a good data recovery program is speed. The candidates were timed in the categories of recovering files, both deleted and missing, recovery of partly overwritten files, deleted partitions, compressed and encrypted files, and restoring files from newly created partitions. The less time they took, the faster they were, and the more points they were awarded. Consequently, this parameter contributed to half the final grade awarded to the program.

The applications had to restore 6,182 deleted and 3,353 lost files from a 5
GB NTFS partition. Subsequently, we encrypted and compressed all the files via NTFS on the same partition, then deleted the partition and re-formatted it, and then retried to recover the data. The programs were also tested on smart cards and a USB stick to judge how well they worked with the FAT file system.
