Data protection

Windows can hide files and directories, but it is not really effective since the status bar at the bottom of the explorer windows displays the number of hidden items in a directory. Any hacker can easily reveal them in a couple of clicks. Here is how to hide and encode complete folders.

HIDE DIRECTORIES

The tool My Lockbox can easily hide directories in Windows. Install and start the tool and set a password. Drag and drop the folders to be hidden into the program interface of the 'My Lockbox Control Panel'. Confirm your action by clicking 'Lock' and the folder will be hidden. It will appear only when you start My Lockbox and enter the password.

CAUTION

My Lockbox program provides only limited protection under Vista. The tool ShadowExplorer will let you view the hidden folders there.

ENCODE FOLDERS

Abylon Basic is a better tool than My Lockbox. It can encode folders using either AES or Blowfish algorithm and protects directories as well as files using a password or a key.

Install abylon and open up the 'ablyon Certmanager' module. Click the 'Create' button from the tool bar and input the form with your specifications like name or email address and confirm by clicking 'Create'. Then, input a secure password, and save the key, because it is with this key that you will be able reopen the encoded
files. Create a backup of the key on an external storage medium and import the key into the database. Once the import is successful, open up Windows Explorer
and navigate to the folder or file you want to encode. Right click on it. Abylon encodes the file with the help of the stored key. If you don't wish to use a created key.In this case, you can enter a random password, and just double clicking on the file is sufficient to open it. However, if you do use the Hybrid. Crypt process, the key must be present on the computer. If you want to send a file, the receiver must have the program installed and must know the key and the password.
