Windows Movie Maker also moves into the Live family, but the new version is a mix of improved and reduced features. It's the only application technically in Beta, and also the only one which can't be used on Windows XP. Live Movie Maker sports an Office-style ribbon interface with its tools on tabs labeled Home, Visual Effects, and Edit. Previous versions were handy for quick (and free) editing jobs such as short amateur movies or ,college projects, but the Live inc'arnation 'feels a lot more limited. Most surprisingly, it does away with the timeline altogether! Clips are arranged as thumb~ails in the right hand pane, which wastes a lot of window space. Other than that the output quality and format options are a lot more limited, although new web upload options for MSN Soapbox (or YouTube and others via plugins) are now added. Even the effects, transitions and text overlay options are a lot fewer than before. WMM used to be a useful, basic video editor, but the new version is just a shell of that former glory.
