Transcoding movies and video clips for your phone or portable media player is easy. But that's provided you know the specifications of the supported video format-video container, audio codec, audio and video bit rate and resolution. MediaCoder iPod/iPhone Edition makes transcoding videos for all iPods (Classic, Nano and Touch) and iPhone a cakewalk. First of all, the user interface doesn't feel intimidating.
Although there are menus, all the functions can be accessed via the buttons on the tool bar and drop down menus. The top half of the UI is where you can drag and drop videos you wish to transcode and the bottom half displays an iPhone (actual size) for previewing videos in its screen area. The video format, resolution and audio and video bit rates are selectable from the drop down menus.
The parameter values are preset so that the transcoded video will play on the iPod. These are standard features available in most video transcoders. But the functions provided for clipping videos and adjusting the brightness, contrast and saturation sets MediaCoder apart from its likes. We also liked the provision for GPU transcode (using Nvidia CUDA) for speeding up the transcoding process.
