Sometimes several bits of data will be imported into Excel in a single column. Re-entering the data can be too time consuming, but there is an alternative if a unique character separates the two parts of the data.

Highlight the column you want to split by left-clicking on the letter at the top. Click on the Data menu and Text to columns. Make sure the top option, Delimited, is selected and click on Next. Select the character that splits up the information (most likely a space, tab or comma). A preview will appear showing lines of where the columns will appear. Click on Next. The final step lets you select the format of each column, whether it is text, number or a date. General is best unless you know otherwise. Click on Finish and the information is split up.
