Thread: PC was infected by the virus

Recently, my PC was infected by the virus 'W32.Popwin'. The PC has Norton Antivirus installed on it. Every time I start the machine, Norton pops up a message saying the file 'C:\Windows\ System32\78FD9CC2.dll' was infected and thus deleted. If scanned, the machine doesn't show the virus. But if it is rebooted, the message reappears. Also, the option for 'Show hidden files and folders' is missing in my PC. There is only one option seen 'Do not show hidden files and folders'. Your system is definitely infected with a worm. Make sure that you clean the computer thoroughly using good antivirus and antispyware software. Tryout AVG (freeware) After you have removed the virus from the computer, follow these steps:
o Temporarily disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP)
 Update the virus definitions.
 Reboot the computer in Safe Mode
 Run a full system scan and clean/delete all infected files
o Modify the value added to the registry. Or Restore the following registry entry to its previous value, if required:
HKEY _LOCAL_MACH I N E\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Wi ndows\C u rre ntVe rs ion\ Explorer\Adva nced\Fo Ide r\H idd e n\ SHOWALL\'CheckedValue' = '0'
o Exit the registry editor and restart the computer.

o In order to make sure that the threat has been completely eliminated from your computer, scan your computer thoroughly using antivirus and antispyware software.
