THIS MATURE, SCALABLE SOFTWARE closely tracks how your business PCs are used, recording every keystroke. Spector 360 isn't cheap, but it's the best tracking software I've tested. The product's Control Center software, running on a networked machine, lets you push monitoring software to Windows PCs, perform the install, and configure and manage the utility.

Dashboard, a graphical.NET program, provides the monitoring interface. Four server components perform tasks such as storing collected data and blocking Web sites. This multicomponent approach lets the product scale better than competitors like PC Activity Monitor Professional (PC Acme Pro), and other than a minor client deployment glitch, I had no problems.

The software offers dozens of monitoring settings. A particularly useful feature gives you powerful control over what to capture, such as text strings in e .. mail subject lines. You can also schedule recording for specific times, save screenshots at certain intervals or when particular actions occur, set keyword trigger alerts, and do far more.

But comprehensive reporting features are what really make Spector 360 stand out. Where PC Acme Pro generates reports that are little more than listings of keystrokes, Spector 360 gives you a full-fledged application with plenty of text reports, charts, and graphs. The product has no major deficiencies and is the most mature program in its class.
