THE MYBOOK MIRROR Edition 2 TB is an external HDD with an awesome 2 terabytes of storage. This version of the My Book is easy on the eyes with its glossy black plastic casing and vertical LED display on the front which fills up as more storage space is used. Using the software that is available with the device, you can easily change the device mode from RAID 1 (backs up the data saved but cuts space available by half) to RAID 0 (which gives you the entire 2 TB of storage space but does not back up the data) and vice versa. However, keep in mind that switching between modes will format all the data that has been stored on the device.
Effectively, the My Book gives the user the final choice between extra storage space and data security. The My Book uses a USB 2.0 interface instead of eSATA or FireWire which means that data transfer speeds are similar to other hard drives that use USB. Transferring 8 GB of data in the form of a single file in RAID 1 mode took us slightly less than four-and-a-half minutes while transferring over 3,600 files (299 folders, 10.5 GB) took over eleven minutes and thirty seconds. The speeds were similar for RAIDO.
The My Book comes with a CD that includes helpful tools such as Memeo Auto¬Sync, a software that helps you synchronize folders in your hard disk to the My Book, MioNet, that allows you to access the My Book over the Internet, WD Anywhere Backup, a backup tool and a diagnostic tool, WD Diag¬nostics along with a set of Google applications. In case of a HOD failure, the drives can be easily replaced by the user. The drives used inside are part ofWD's Green Power line (reviewed in PC World's April issue).
At Rs. 31,500, the My Book is on the pricier side; it would have been great if the device's price was a few thousands lower. The Mirror Edition My Book is still a good purchase for users who want a great deal of storage space and security at the same time.
