Of the initiators ( The Document Foundation ), it was desired to be able to continue the project OpenOffice.org and product development. The naming rights to the trademark "OpenOffice.org" however, were far from Sun and Oracle have been transferred to the corporate takeover beginning of 2010.

Without an agreement, it is not allowed to use that name. Since Oracle will not participate in the Foundation and adheres to the naming rights, it was necessary to use a new name - select - LibreOffice.

LibreOffice is initially available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X and is based on the OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 code line that was extended by a few patches. LibreOffice also supports the OpenDocument Format (ODF) and sets this as the default storage format.

The free office suite from a combination of different programs (Base, Calc, Draw, Impress, Math, Writer) is under version 3 of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
