Each time the computer boots I receive a prompt for the time and date.
If your computer has been able to keep the time and date in the past and has suddenly in the progress prompting you for the time and date, and you are running Microsoft Windows or MS DOS then confirm that the computer has an autoexec.bat and config.sys file. If this file is missing then it will need to be recreated or restored from a backup.
It is very much familiar for computers using an Intel 80286 and lower processor to not have a CMOS / RTC battery. If your computer does not have a CMOS / RTC battery, it is performance as intended. If you have a computer in a while than an 80286 or a computer that has been build in the last few years, it is probable that your CMOS or RTC battery has died. Get in touch with your computer and/or motherboard producer to purchase a substitute battery or if you have a coin cell battery on your motherboard you may also want to just find a substitute online or throughout a local electronics store such as Radio Shack.
