Default 2.8 GHz CPU running at 1.4 GHz. Dell dimension 4500

Alright, so I've been searching the web for about two days demanding to solve my problem as well as have been ineffective. I'm fairly skilled with computers so the reason that I'm am asking here is because the trouble is beyond my knowledge, not because I'm too idle to undertake to figure it out for myself. Believe me, I have tried.

So here's the problem: I just purchased a dell dimension 4500 from a friend in hopes of turning it into a well-mannered (not incredible) gaming computer. I don't really want to play something better than Crysis of war or bf2. When I buy it, it had a 2.2 GHz P4, which is alright but I required to get it as quick as I could so I bought a Northwood (I already know about the Northwood Prescott issue) 2.8 GHz P4.

The processor arrived yesterday as well as I instantly plugged it into my mainboard. I rapidly realized that my computer was booting much slower as well as my first thought was that I the CPU was defective. After a long load time, I got to the control panel plus checked the system settings also they say that my PC is an IP4 2.8 GHz running at 1.4 GHz.

After ineffectively trying to repair the trouble myself I searched the internet for a very long time and finally found out that the 2.8 processor is 533mhz as well as my MoBo is set for 400mhz. Being that my board is an Intel board, I found that I couldn't modify the bus speed whatever because it is locked.

So usually I would just say "ah crap, that sucks" as well as give up, but after more research I found that every particular motherboard spec website I could find says that my MoBo does in fact support CPU with a 533mhz bus speed

So first I tried to flash the BIOS and that it seems that did nothing, then I did a little research on overclocking, but most sources state that it's not feasible with my board.

So this is where I am... Here's the specs

    dell dimension 4500

    motherboard: Intel d845ept2

CPU: Northwood 2.8ghz Intel Pentium 4

If you need more specs then I will try to dig them up. I make an apology for the long post, but I thought it would be unhelpful if I explained the whole thing I have done so you won't be suggestive of stuff that I've already tried.

Thank you, I actually expect you can help me.

Yes, it is almost certainly related to the jumper settings if there are any. On older motherboards there are jumper plugs that plug into things that look like pins. I can't explain it so looks in your Dell manual as well as see if it assumed something.

The Dell 4500 will not carry 800MHz fsb processors. You will require finding 533fsb CPUs built on the Northwood core. The highest obtainable is the 3.06GHz Hyperthreading enabled Northwood. You can inform it is a Northwood because it will have 512kb L2 cache. I don't mind what you supposed about the 2.8GHz CPU you have, it has to be an 800MHz fsb CPU for it to post at only 400MHz fsb.

If you want to have a little excitement, break BSEL 0 pin off of the 2.2GHz Pentium 4 to make it into a 533MHz fsb CPU. That will make it run at 2.93GHz, which is possible on stock voltage. I'd say you have an 80% possibility of it functioning, and it would almost be as quick as whatever thing you could acquire that would work in that Dell. Use the picture below as your guide. Ignore the 2.4 GHz, your 2.2GHz CPU will run at 2.93 GHz after this mod.

There's no way in this earth your 2.2 can look dissimilar. It is socket 478. All sockets 478's make use of the similar pin layout, so it concern to you as is. If the capacitors on the bottom are special, it doesn't matter. Just break off the highlighted pin (wiggling back and forth until it breaks, using a automatic pencil works pretty good as you just stick the end of the pencil over the pin). All the old pinmodding guides for socket 478 are now out of use.

The 2.0GHz 400fsb P4s operates very excellent with this model. They're certain 2.66GHz overclocks. I've completed a half dozen of those 2.0 P4s, as well as every one worked great.

If your motherboard is compatible 400 with 533 fsb CPUs (for example the Dell Dimension 4500 we are talking about in this thread, then yes, you are right in stating that there is no pin mod to get additional speed out of the 2.4GHz/533fsb P4 you presently have, as it is previously running on the highest bus supported by the motherboard.

Yes, that is right. generally, the old C1 stepping P4s only required more voltage when they advance the 3.0GHz barrier, up till then they are frequently rock solid steady.
