    Default AMD socket 939 athlon processor 3800 + 2.4ghz

AMD socket 939 athlon processor 3800 + 2.4ghz this is the processor I currently have, just a few questions regarding it. I was wondering if this is an upgrade from the Pentium 4 2.9 ghz processor I had in a dell dimension 3100 as far as performance for games and multi-tasking

Also what would be a suggested upgrade for this processor staying with the same Motherboard and the socket 939, and where may be the least expensive place to get it.

Also in my bios the temp shows 145F and there is a large cooler master fan on the heat sink, and the heat sink doesn’t feel hot to the touch. Is it possible the temp isn’t accurate, There are no problems noticed with the pc that is what makes me believe the temp is wrong, or do they normally run hot?

If I upgrade to a dual core will I need a better heatsink and fan & also I have an asustek Nagami motherboard with 2gb ram and a 600 w psu

    Thanks

No, it won't be much of an upgrade, but there are Athlon X2 dual cores for your socket, that would be a major upgrade, just by a "boxed" version and you'll get a new heatsink and fan.

The poster above must be thinking of AM2 processors they won't work on your 939 mother board. Both set ups you listed are very dated and low performers compared to today's hardware. Save your money.

Only get a S939 athlon X2 if the price is really good, though from what i have looked at they are not cheap

you may be better off getting a new motherboard, cpu, ram.

I bought a 939 3600+ x2 for about fifty bucks. The 3600+ is a lot cheaper than its brothers because of it's smaller cache size. In the real world it doesn't make a big difference. Then I put a twenty buck cooler on it and have it overclocked to 2.6 ghz. It was a huge upgrade from my 3.0 ghz single core. I'm running it with 2gigs of ddr1 at 440 mhz and an 8800gt video card. I have one of the odd motherboards with a couple of pci express slots. My system plays modern games fairly well on my 1680 by 1050 screen.

    Hope this was helpful.

I went from a skt 939 3600 x2 to an am2 athlon 7750, x2 @3ghz, and although there is a difference in performance it isn’t a huge leap, so if I were you I would get a 3600 x2 or higher if possible, but, as mentioned the 3600 is very capable processor, and it isn’t a dinosaur if it does what you want it too, I never came across anything it couldn’t handle in day to day computing, casual gaming, photoshop etc.
