Before touching your computer irrespective of make or model turn it off, unplug it form the power cord and take out the battery. As one shock to your computer can fry it to a situation from where it will be irrecoverable. Follow these easy steps for making the upgrade safe and successful.
On Dell Inspiron 6000, you are required to break the computer apart to take the guts of from it. With the Gateway 6000 series, I only need to remove the bottom cover. There are a few screws holding the cover in its place. Unscrew them and remove the cover and the main parts of the computer will be exposed in front of you. After opening it up the big copper cooler and fan will be visible at the right side of the memory slots.
This has a 512 MB stick of memory, leaving one slot unused. All is required to do is put the other stick in the slot and push it down till it locks. This is standard for all memory in most notebooks.
