A lot of supercomputers are designed for use in research simulations. While the Milenium Run attempts to track the developments of the universe, Japan’s Earth Simulator is designed to simulate the Earth’s environment. The Earth Simulator supercomputer is also very important, with 5120 processors going up to 35.86 TFLOPS. It was the quickest supercomputer in the world from 2002-2004, and has since only fallen to third position.
The computer has run simulations of the Earth’s environment and oceans. It has done holistic studies with a precision of 10 kilometer. The supercomputer is also being used by Solid Earth Simulation Group to follow the things happening under the Earth’s surface, designing algorithms to copy geophysical processes. The data from the Earth Simulator is used by National Space Development Agency (NASDA) of Japan, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), and Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC).
