OEM software prices are rising. For instance, when we priced motherboards for a new system in 2004, we could have purchased full OEM versions of Windows XP Home for , Windows XP Pro for 3, Office Basic 2003 for 5, or Office Pro 2003 for 0 with the purchase of the motherboard. Full OEM versions costs about two-thirds the price of retail upgrade-only versions and for less than half the price of retail full versions, so if one wants the software this is a affordable way to get it. Obviously, Microsoft doesn’t support OEM versions, the main reason behind the low prices.
