The optical mouse replaces the mouse ball with optical sensors that track the movement of the mouse over a sUlface. Older optical mouse required a highly reflective mouse-pad with a printed grid that was used to detect mouse movement. Although in this mouse the mouse ball was removed and so were the probloems related to it, it haq its own set of problems. It was slow, and if the mouse pad was lost, the mouse could not work.
The newer optical mouse captures images of the surface under the mouse at a speed more than 1,500 images per second. A DSP (Digital Signal Processor) inside the mouse analyzes and compare the images optical mouse design works on virtually any flat surface and does not need a mouse-pad, although one' can be used. However, some surfaces, such as glass, mirrors, or smooth shiny, solid-color surfaces without detail, do not work well with an optical mouse.
The fact that it does not need to be cleared internally is the biggest advantage that an optical mouse has over a conventional mouse. An optical mouse has no moving part, like ball, and thus it does not pick up dust and dirt that affects the- working of mouse. According to a survey, optical mouse are 33% faster than opto-mechanical mouse.
