USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports offer a surprising amount of flexibility when connecting external devices, like mouse, to the system. While USB ports are well supported under Windows98/Me/XP, there are numerous issues that may damage USB operation and mouse performance. Some commonly occurred issues are listed hereunder. Use them to troubleshoot the USB mouse.

• Check the Operating System version: USB mouse require Windows 98/Me/XP. Windows 95 with the USB supplement are not supported.

• Check the driver versions: Connecting a USB mouse to a USB port on your computer system should result in the device being detected by the system. This may require the Windows 98/Me1XP installation CD, so insert the CD when Windows prompted. You may use the default USB driver that comes with Windows 98/MelXP. But to use the improved features of your mouse, the very latest driver versions for your mouse are needed. In most cases, you can obtain the latest mouse drivers directly from the manufacturer's Website. Uninstall any older version of the mouse from your system before installing the version that shipped with your current mouse, or use the Update Driver button located on the Driver tab of your mouse's Properties dialog box.

• Enable the USB Controller: Many USB systems shipped with the USB ports disabled. These systems must have their USB ports enabled before the mouse will be detected and function properly. These USB ports are generally enabled through the CMOS setup. If a USB add-on card is being used, make sure that it is retail version. Pre-release versions of USB cards will not function correctly with current USB hardware. Check with the USB card's manufacturer for new drivers. Check the CMOS Setup and verify that the PC's USB port is enabled.

• Open the Device Manager, and then click over the plus sign beside the Mice and other pointing device option. Make sure that there is a mouse entry that states the name of your U~B device. You may also see a Mouse entry under the Human Interface Devices entry. If there are any errors reported on these icons (by exclamation points or red Xl. highlight these icons and click on the Remove button. Once these icons have been removed, click the Refresh button and allow Windows to redetect the pointing device. Open the Device Manager again, and verify that there are no errors reported. Power down the down the computer and restart Windows, and then test the USB device to see if it is working.
