Growl allows you to know when things take place. Files completed downloading, friends came online, and new email has come. Also allow you to know when event happens with subtle notice. Rest of time, Growl stays out of way.

Growl also provides complete control over how you notified and what action you want to take in reply to notification. You can select to be alerted with visual indicator or clear alert, both. Also select type of display that is displayed, whether display stays on screen, significance of notification, and although notification must be forwarded to other PC. You can have notifications that trigger email, run script, run program, or read out loud.
