Pidgin is an instant messenger that for systems (Linux, BSD) Unix was written like originally, but now Microsoft is also running Windows and can be greatly expanded with plug-ins. Pidgin is a multi-protocol client that allows the same program for different instant messenger services to use. This capability is enabled by plugins that implement the particular protocol for Pidgin, at least in part. Besides the official plugins for the officially supported protocols, there are still this extra plugins, which are provided by other developers or projects to Pidgin to make these networks compatible.
