If the list of the sub-directories and files present inside any directory is too long, it will scroll off the screen and you will not be able to clearly see all of its contents. You may only see the last few file names. In such cases, the /P command comes to your rescue. Suppose, currently you are in the Root directory and you wish to see its entire contents one screen at a time, i.e., the next screen comes up only when you require it. To do so, type the following command:
C:\>DIR/P.J
As soon as a screen-full of file names gets displayed, a message Press any key to continue also pops up. Press any key from the keyboard to see rest of the files.
