STEP 1

START YOUR WEB BROWSER and type the Address or Location bar at the top of the screen, and then press Enter. When the Evernote page opens click the Free Download button.A dialogue box is displayed asking if you want to run the file or save it. Click the Save button, select the Windows Desktop as the destination for the file, then click the Save button again.

STEP 2

ONCE THE FILE HAS finished downloading, which might take time because,at about 56MB, it's a big file, click on the Close button in the dialogue box, then on the red X in the top right-hand corner of the screen to close the web browser. To install Evernote,double-c1ick its icon on the Windows Desktop. During installation you'll be asked to read and agree to the terms of the licence. After this, choose Express set-up.A message box will be displayed saying that advanced features will only be available for 60 days - click on OK. Evernote then starts for the first time.

STEP 3

THE ADVANCED FEATURES ARE mainly concerned with running Evernote on pen-based Tablet PCs, so rest assured that the main features of Evernote will continue to function normally for as long as needed. A sample file (Evernote calls it a database) is automatically loaded, with various categories listed in a pane on the left of the screen. After each category is a number in brackets, which indicates how many notes it contains. Click on the Personal category, which contains four notes.

STEP 4

USE THE TOPMOST scroll baron the right of the screen to view the four personal notes, three of which are to-do lists in various stages of completion. Click on any ofthe other categories and its contents will be displayed in a similar way. Although it seems as if an Evernote database is structured by category, this is not the case.Think ofthe database as an endless roll of paper tape divided into pages of unequal lengths. Everything you place in the database is added at the end ofthe tape.

STEP 5

ASSIGN ING A CATEGORY TO a note is just a way of bei ng able to view it more conveniently. When selecting a category in the left¬hand pane, Evernote filters out every other category and displays only the matching pages from its endless tape. Look at the header sections of the first two to-do lists and you'll see that multiple categories have been assigned to each note:the completed one belongs to the Personal and Done categories, while the incomplete one belongs to Personal, Shopping List and To-Do.

STEP 6

BUT CATEGORIES AREN'T NEEDED to find information. Evernote indexes every single word of every note, whether you've typed it yourself or pasted it in from a web page or any other program. To search every note for a specified word or phrase, click the All Notes icon on the tool bar near the top of the screen, and then click in the search pane on the right ofthe tool bar. Start typing the word 'restaurant' (without the speech marks) as you type each letter, matching notes will appear with the text that you've typed highlighted.

STEP 7

THE PLUS VERSION OF Evernote allows searching for handwritten text and for text contained within photographs. The free version of Evernote provides these features for 60 days.Try it by clicking on All Notes and searching for'Moscow'. Evernote finds 'Moscow' on a photograph of a white board. Search for 'recognition' and Evernote finds the word in a sample of handwriting imported from a Tablet PC.

STEPS 8

NOW LET'S START PUTTING things into Evernote. The most basic method is typing but,as we'll explain later, there are better ways.To create a typed note, click on New Note on the tool bar. Evernote jumps instantly to the end of the tape and places a text cursor in a blank note. Just start typing, and stop when you've typed enough. Evernote notes everything that is typed, so you don't have to click'save.

STEP 9

WHILE TYPING A NOTE, make the text bold by holding down the Ctrl key and tapping the B key once. Repeat this process to turn the bold off. Italics and underlining can be produced in a similar way by using Ctrl and I and Ctrl and U. For more control over how text looks, click on the icon in the top right-hand corner of the note you're typing. This opens up an editor (a sort of mini word processor) giving control over the style, size, colour and alignment of the text.

STEP 10

CLOSE THE EDITOR AND return to the Evernote tape by clicking the red X in the top right-hand corner of the editor. Another way of getting material into Evernote is to copy it from a different program. The procedure is to select the material to be copied in the other program, and then choose Copy in that program's Edit menu (or press the Ctrl and C keys together). Back in Evernote,an empty note is created by clicking New Note, then pasting the material in by pushing the Ctrl and V keys together.

STEP 11

A MORE SOPHISTICATED WAY of pasting material into Evernote is through its clipping tool.To use this,c1ick on the Evernote Tools menu and select Launch Universal C1ipper.This places an icon (a tick in a white circle) in the Notification Area on the right ofthe WindowsTaskbar. Now material can be imported into Evernote by selecting it in any program and clicking on the icon. There's no need to create a new note first. This screenshot shows the results achieved using the Universal Clipper (bottom) instead of standard copying and pasting (top).

STEP 12

THE UNIVERSAL CLIPPER CAN also be used to capture only part of a screen. To try it out,double-c1ick on the Universal Clipper icon on the Taskbar. This displays a tiny floating window called Clipper, which contains two icons. Click on the icon on the rightto display a frame that can be resized by dragging its corners then click on the icon on the left to capture the framed area and send it to Evernote.lf you ever have problems finding material clipped into Eve rn ote, look in the Uncategorized category .

STEP 13

WHENEVER IT CAN, EVERNOTE automatically categorises new notes and clippings. It is able to recognise information from Microsoft Office and many other programs, but you'll need to add your own categories to notes that have been manually typed, and you may also wish to change the automatically assigned categories for your own purposes. This section of a SSC web page has been automatically assigned to the category of Images and Images with Printed Text, but this can be chan5)ed by clicking on the luggage label icon at the top of the note.

STEP 14

THERE'S A LOT MORE to be achieved with Evernote, so start experimenting. The sample notes can be individually removed by clicking on the X at the top of each note or they can be deleted in bulk by clicking on All Notes followed by Note List. This displays a spreadsheet-like list of all the notes. Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the notes you wish to remove, then click on the right mouse button and select Delete from the menu. You'll be asked to confirm the deletions.
