The service provider (SP) needs to manage networking equipment from multiple vendors and wants to do it easily, cost-effectively, using methods that are not error-prone, to keep its customers and win more. To reach this goal, the SP needs to succeed at numerous tasks, to include setting up a service in a timely manner, monitoring performance before it escalates into a serious problem, pinpointing the cause of problems quickly to return to normal network operation, as well as keeping an inventory of installed equipment and services to plan for sufficient available capacity in the future.
Whereas the TMN architecture is a business model, the FCAPS model encapsulates the functions for successful implementation of these tasks. Ironically the acronym's spelling order is a memory device; it is not in the order of executing the tasks. For example, Fault management is not done before the service is configured and deployed.
