    Default PC in office

[Q] I have some queries I need you to help me solve. My cousin is a sub-broker and he does all his broking through a reputed company. He does his business deals through the PC in his office. The company often remotely accesses his PC and makes changes to the registry or updates the software as and when required. A few days ago, as usual, they accessed the computer remotely and made some changes. But since then my cousin is unable to turn on any sound from the computer. My cousin then asked me to help solve the problem, but I could not figure out how to turn the sound back on. I tried the sound and audio properties options from the Control Panel. But all the options there have been grayed out or disabled. There is no sound output from the PC, be it error messages or any audio file. Please help me get the sound back to its normal state. Secondly, if I back up my important files to a good quality DVD like Sony Accucore how long can I expect the data to last? Waiting for your reply.

Please uninstalt the existing sound drivers on the computer. You can do so by uninstalling the driver set from the 'Add/Remove programs' option in the Control Panel. Also check if the sound card is enabled in the BIOS. Then download latest sound A
card arivers for your motherl 1 crard from the Internet and install them again. Check your motherboard manual for the manufacturer's name and website from where you can get the sound card drivers. If it still does not work, your sound card may be defective. Check if the sound hardware is working by using any free live Linux distribution such as Knoppix or Ubuntu. You do not need to install Linux, just boot from the CD/DVD and Linux will run on your computer and use all the resources needed. If the sound works in Linux, then the hardware is fine. You may need to check faults with the Windows installation, such as corrupted files and viruses. For your second query, the life
of the DVD media depends purely on its handling and the quality of the DVD media itself. Usually, you can keep any CD/DVD for 10 years or more, but if the DVD is of a cheaper quality, is badly kept in a jewel case or even handled without care, the life of the data may be extremely short.
