In ancient Greece, it was the Oracle of Delphi that answered all of mankind's questions, and today it is Google that explains everything and is foremost in
the minds of Web surfers.
The success story began in 1998. Two 25-year-old computer scientists, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, left the Stanford University campus-even though they had their theses to write-and moved their development lab to a California garage to help them work better. There, they created an algorithm which soon outshone the best Web search engines of the time including AltaVista and Yahoo. Within a decade, the two-man company became a global corporation with 17,000 employees, countless server farms, and a higher value in the stock market than IBM.
There are numerous reasons for their success. One of them is the work atmosphere. Google is considered to be one of the most popular employers in the world. One day a week is given to employees to pursue their own research projects, thus winning over tons of talented university graduates. Another tactic Google uses is building its development centers near highly recognized centers of education.
