Cisco, in the 2008 release of its annual security report has warned that Internet based attacks are becoming more and more sophisticated and attackers are honing their skills at compromising security systems.

According to the report, spam now accounts for nearly 200 billion email messages per day, or approximately 90 percent of all email. The USA is the largest source of spam, accounting for 17.2 percent, followed by Turkey, Russia, Canada, Brazil and India in sixth place with 3.5 percent. Specially targeted spear-phishing now accounts for one percent of all phishing attacks, but is expected to become more widespread in 2009. The use of social engineering will continue to grow and such attacks will also become more sophisticated and use more variety.

Trends to watch out for in the field of corporate security intelligence include threats potentially caused by disgruntled employees and data loss through negligence or theft of equipment.
