When a PC that had been working perfectly goes on the blink, what do you do? Yes, replicating the error to find its root cause is required, but hard disk data is probably a higher priority. I would be great if you could somehow boot up into an environment from where you could safely copy away your most valuable files and folders to an external storage device. Once that is done, you can breathe so much easier while identifying the cause of the hardware problem, or re-installing your operating system to fix it back to normal. UltimateBootCD' (UBCD) does great as a free system recovery option. It boots up from a CD, runs independent of any OS, and offers a number of tools classified into sections in a "multi-boot" menu.
Finding out what hardware components are in your computer, stress testing them, benchmarking, hard disk partition management. data erasing, browsing through files and folders, are all possible without having to install anything. The UBCD keeps getting updated all the time with new versions of its component tools being added or better ones being added in place of obsolete ones.
