Windows Live Messenger has been around for a while, but the newest version adds a lot of new social features. Customization is improved through "scenes"-themes with associated background imagery and color schemes. The interface has also been spruced up, and you can designate contacts as Favorites, which can be larger and permanently pinned to the top of your contact list. Status indicators are simplified, and are now shown as prominent colored frames around contacts' display pictures. Photo sharing is easier, with images appearing like a gallery inside conversation windows. And a "What's new" feed now occupies a large part of your contact list window, displaying your contacts' social activities across Live sites and other social communities, much like Facebook's News Feed.
