Ellion HMR 350H
Hello.
I have recently purchased the Ellion HMR 350 H which was featured as the Product a few months ago. Everything works fine on it and it is a brilliant digital media recorder. I have been checking out the home page of Ellion Digital and found that there are a few updated versions of the firmware available there. I downloaded the latest firmware and was ready to update the player, but after reading the procedure and precautions for updating it, I am in a fix. I have installed a 1 TB hard drive in the player and it contains a lot of my movies, songs and photos. The hard drive is almost 90 percent full. Now the manual says that I should back up all the data on the hard drive because once the firmware update is done, it will be formatted again. I do not have any other drive except for one 80 GB SATA hard drive for backups. But how will all the data fit on it? Please help me as I do not want to lose all the movies, but also want to update the new firmware. The update states (also on the forum) that it is very good and the menu system is not as sluggish as before. It also has scheduled recording feature which would be helpful for me. As I saw that you had reviewed this player, you might be the only one who can help me.

Hello.
It is true that the Ellion HMR350H is a very good media player but has a very sluggish menu interface, Yes, I have also gone through the manufacturer's website and had a look at the documentation about the new firmware available. As you mentioned that you have an 80 GB SATA hard drive, you actually have a workaround. Before you update the firmware, remove the 1 TB hard drive from the player and install the 80 GB hard drive. Before you do so, make sure that the 80 GB hard drive has no important data on it. If so, back it up first and then proceed. After installing the 80 GB hard drive, update the firmware of the player by following the procedure described on the website or in the manual. Once done, you will find that the player will give you instructions on the TV screen to set it up for the. first time. After all that is done, it will inform you to partition the hard drive and format it. Follow steps till the player is completely set up. Then, turn it off and replace the 80 GB drive with your orignial 1 TB drive. Your data will be unaffected and you can use the player as before with the updated firmware on it. If your player insists that it should format the 1 TB hard drive too (which shouldn't happen), then you will have to find a way to back up all the data on it. There is no other way, but luckily 1 TB drives are extremely affordable now! All the best with your new update.
