Thread: I have a problem with my computer

It was not used for the last eight months and today when I connected the peripherals (monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc) the monitor showed no signal. The CPU fan, SMPS fan, CD drive and HDD all spin, but the monitor is totally blank. I have checked all the cables and reconnected them. I also replaced the CMOS battery with a new one. I think the keyboard is also not getting any power. My PC configuration is: Mercury 865 motherboard, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, Intel Dual Core 2.66 GHz processor and Windows XP.

Check if the CMOS battery is a new one. Also check for dust settled in various places on the motherboard and other peripherals. Clean the terminals of the RAM and expansion cards such as the graphics card. Remove the CPU and clean it thoroughly. Use a good layer of CPU paste and mount the fan again. Finally after cleaning and checking all connections, see if the system works, else you may need check each individual component. You would require the help of a hardware engineer or a friend who can supply you the spare parts to swap out and test them.
