The allure of the fast growing netbook segment has finally lured Sony. The first salvo from Sony comes in the form of the Vaio W, a stylish and great looker with excellent build quality.
There is no doubt that the notebook creates a style statement with its pebble shape, anti skid body and feather-light weight (1.15kg). The Vaio W sports an Intel Atom processor N280 (1.66 GHz) instead of Intel N270. The rest of the configuration is similar to other netbooks, except that a three cell battery comes as standard.
The netbook sports a fancy isolated keyboard with geometric touchpad, and both work well. The on/off latch and wireless on/off switch are also handy. There are two card readers - the 4-in-1, and another dedicated Pro 2 duo card reader.
The Sony Vaio W has a 10.1 in screen with a high resolution of 1366x768. The pictures look sharp and clear as compared to other standard netbook screens. We did not find any distortion or ghosts while viewing a nop HD movie. Although the sound level is adequately high, it lacks bass and treble at full volume. We think with a good pair of headphone the sound will surely be of high calibre.
This eye candy comes in three different colours pink, brown and white. The battery life is around 2 hours and 40 minutes, which is below average. We wish, Sony will consider a six-cell battery as an option in future versions of this netbook.
