I have a Dell Studio 15 laptop with 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 250 GB hard disk, 2 GB memory with MacAfee antivirus preloaded. But I didn't update my antivirus because I do not have an Internet connection available and now I have a problem. The system reports an error 'Com surrogate had stopped working' and also 'Rundll32error Windows has stopped working' whenever I open any folder in my laptop. I need to know the reason for the errors and the solution too. You are a great hope for me. Thanks in advance.

This problem is usually caused due to codecs and other COM components, installed by various software, that are not completely compatible with Windows Vista. These of DivX or Nero burning rom. Try the latest versions of DivX, use Nero's higher version, update Windows Service pack to the latest, etc. to solve the problem. You will definitely need an internet connection for the updates. Make sure that the system is free from viruses.

You can also try uninstalling the DivX and Nero software completely and reinstalling a newer version downloaded from the Internet. It is recommended to install the Vista Codec Pack to update all the codec in Windows Vista. In certain cases, disabling the thumbnail preview also helps.
