As the computer becomes older, its recycling programs may require more time. While some of this slowdown can be attributed to too many files or the viruses, the problem is likely due to fragmentation.

    Background

Writing a file on disk fragments of his pieces in non-contiguous clusters. This can slow down the processing of files, especially when clusters are far from each other, as read / write head of hard disk drive must have access to information.

    Defragmenting

Defragmenting is the procedure of moving the clusters around to make them nonstop, which speeds file handling.

    Tool

Many OS have integrated defragmentation tools. For example, in Windows XP, you can right-click on the disk through "My Computer," click "Properties," select the "Tools" tab and choose "Defragment."

    Program

If your system should be built in programs, you can purchase a commercial program. Its advantage is that it works in the background, so you can continue the normal tasks of a computer during his work ..

    Timing

Depending on how much you use your system, defragment it at least once a month. Otherwise, if you process information for several hours a day, try once a week.

Its a process by which fragmented files are placed back together in order so that the HDD can access them faster. Just like you can find your things faster from a shelf thats well organized , your files will open faster from a defragged drive.
I use Diskeeper to defrag my drives. Completely automatic and use
