Released in 2003, Dell Inspiron 5100 is a laptop initially intended to give entry-level users of time with a mobile substitute for desktop PC. In its base arrangement, 5100 came set with a 2.4-GHz Pentium 4 processor, 256MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive and a 15-inch LCD screen.
· Put in laptop's battery into battery bay if it is not already installed. Battery bay is placed near device; press battery in until you feel it click into place. Attach power cord to AC adapter. Connect AC adapter into a grounded electrical outlet. Attach other end of AC adapter into adapter port placed on rear of laptop, beside air vents. If you are planning to attach laptop straight to cable or DSL connection or to combine it into a wired network, attach Ethernet cable to port on rear left edge of device.
· Unlock display by sliding handle placed on front edge of laptop; open display. Push power knob, placed under display.
· Permit laptop to begin, and then log in. If OS is not installed go to optical drive by pressing button on its exterior pane. Put in system installation CD or DVD and close optical drive; follow instructions.
· Go to "Start" menu and choose "Internet Explorer." When "New Connection Wizard" emerges, follow instructions to set up Internet connection.
· Find speaker icon. Double click on it to open sound settings and fine-tune volume level to preferred levels.
· Go to "Start" menu. Then "All Programs" tab. Check listings and choose application you want to utilize. Click on an application name to run program.
