Dr DivX is a video conversion utility used to convert a variety of video formats into the .AVI format. The advantage in using this format is that video quality suffers only slightly, while the file size is reduced by as much as seventy to eighty percent [depending on the compression settings and the number of passesl.

However, Dr DivX doesn't recognize the .dat extension. This is the default format for VCDs [Video Compact Disks). When you try to convert .dat video files in Dr DivX, an error is reported saying that the file format is not supported.

All you need to do is rename the file to a format that allows Dr DivX to recognize the file and the contents inside it. We recommend renaming it to the "mpeg" extension. When you restart Dr DivX, it will recognize the format and convert it.
