Go to the Control Panel, click on "Sounds and audio devices" and select the "Audio" tab. Under the "Sound playback" option, make sure that the "Default device" for sound playback matches the soundcard installed on your computer.

There are other device drivers [such as the modem sound driver) that Windows might be trying to use as the default device for sound playback, hence it is important to ensure that Windows is using the correct device.

To ensure that the assigned device is being used for sound playback, enable the option "Use only default devices" under the "Audio" tab.
