This is a common problem, which affects external hard-drives too. Here are some basic troubleshooting steps you could follow. o Try a different USB port on your
PC. There must be at least two ports available, so try them in turn. Some USB ports have problems with recognition, while others don't.

o Since you've already restarted your PC, check to see the latest version of iTunes on the Internet/itunes/downloadl and iPod software ipod/downloadl. Often, removing and replacing iTunes with the same version or a newer one may help.

o If you don't have the latest updates installed on your PC, download
and install those [from. Ensure that you have at least Windows Service Pack 1
installed; this will solve certain USB 2.0 compatibility problems.

However, if you use a laptop instead of a regular desktop PC, solving the problem is much easier. Most laptops are configured to conserve power by turning off power on the USB bus.

This feature might be responsible for Windows refusing to recognize your
iPod. To resolve this issue, turn USB bus power low to bflrllJ the computer out 01 tandby.

o On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

o Double-click the System icon.

o Click the Hardware tab.

o Click on Device Manager,

o Scroll down the list of devices to "Universal Serial.

Bus controllers" and click the '+' sign alongside.

o Double-click one of the indented
USB Root Hub entries. Since it's almost impossible to know which USB hub is root, deselect all.

o Click the "Power Management" tab and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

o Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window, and restart your computer.
