It's not easy to troubLeshoot a USB device, since they are usually pLug-n-pLay devices. If your as is Windows XP, it's very easy to install and begin using a USB device; Windows XP has its own native drivers. But if your thumb drive is not detectable, then the issue is probabLy hardware reLated. You couLd try the following steps to soLve this issue:
o Sometimes the probLem can be resoLved by simpLy unpLugging the
drive and pLugging it back in firmLy. It also couLd be a case of a fauLty or loose connection.
o You couLd try restarting the PC.
Voltage drops across the USB ports can aLso be responsibLe. Whenever you use a hi-speed or a USB 2.0 enabLed drive, it's possibLe that the system may take a whiLe to recognize and power up the device. It is therefore advisabLe to wait for a few minutes.
If the as you are using is Windows 98 or ME, any pLug-n-pLay devices won't be installed automatically because of Window 98's Lack of native USB drivers. To find out if it's a driver-reLated issue, right-click on the "My Computer" icon and seLect "Properties". On the "System Properties" diaLog box, under the "Hardware" tab, seLect the "Device Manager" button.
In the "Device Manager" diaLog box, check for any exclamation marks in yellow circles. These symboLs indicate that the hardware has been detected but has not been instalLed compLeteLy or that there is a driver conflict.
You may see a red "X" that indicates that the device has been detected but the drivers have not been instaLLed. In either case, in order to get the device running, you wiLL have to install Windows 98 specific drivers. These are usually bundLed aLong with the device.
After installing the drivers, if there is stiLL an exclamation mark against the device [indicating a conflictl. doubLe-click on the device, and seLect the "Resources" tab. CLear the "Use Automatic Settings" check box, and click on "Change Settings". SeLect a suitabLe memory range for your drive. o FinaLLy, consider the possibiLity
that your pen drive itseLf may be maLfunctioning. USB flash drives are very rugged devices and can withstand most mechanicaL shocks very weLL; so the pen drive may not be the problem.
