Macs and PCs can share Microsoft Office docu¬ments, but a couple of warnings apply. Though you should have no prob¬lem with Office 2007 and 2008 files, Macs running Office 2004 or Office v. X for Mac must use Microsoft's beta stand-alone converter to open Office 2007 (PC) and 2008 (Mac) Word (.docx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files; a converter for newer Excel (.xlsx) files will probably have appeared by the time you read this. (Oddly, Apple's Numbers already opens .xlsx files just fine.) As for other software, most market¬leading apps come in Windows and Mac OS X versions that are nearly identical, so you can switch between them with minimal or no retraining.
