As of these final couple of decades in the development of personal computers, computer ports have drastically evovled very little. 8088 XT computers had single external port for the keyboard and that’s it. The remaining of the internal and external devices had to be linked through extra controllers placed int ISA expansion slots.
Since then major and more proper controllers were built into the mainbord, where as at present everything is dealed by a 1-3 chips on the mainboard, addind up external PS2, USB, COM, LPT, VGA, audio, Ethernet, eSATA, FireWire and internal IDE, floppy, SATA, USB etc.
