Things you will need PS2 reality player (ON C:RiP) CDGenPS2 (ON C:RiP) DVDDecrypter (ON C:RiP)
A blank CD/DVD
Let us begin with a brief explanation about this workshop. By the time you finish conducting this workshop, you'll be able to boot your PlayStation 2 with the CD/DVD and load the relevant program-PS2reality onto it. Once loaded, the program enables you to play DivX movies, MP3 tracks and view JPEG images too. Let's discuss about it as we move on to the workshop.

Step 1:
First copy the file 'Divx_on_PS2_software.exe' from this month's CHIP DVD and paste it onto one of the hard drives in your computer. Extract the contents into a common folder. Now run the application 'CDGenPS2'-it does not need installation. Our primary objective is to create an image of the application, burn it on a CD/DVD and boot the PS2 with it. CDGenPS2 will do just that for us. But first, we need to compile the image that needs to be burnt. The following step will show us the 'how to'. Do not be alarmed by the second entry in this screen shot-'System. cnf', as Step 2 has an elaborate explanation of what the file is doing out here.

Step 2:
Once you are at this screen, open the folder that contains the 'PS2 reality player' and go into the 'PS2' folder. All the files listed here are what 'DIVX_Movie.avi'; this is because a movie file has been included at the end of the compilation. See box, 'Which media to select'? We chose the former method
and integrated a DivX into the boot CD.

If you want to go for the latter method, do not drag-and-drop DivX files into the compilation. In this case, your last entry would be idioma.txt. Now, let us burn this compilation onto a CD/DVD.

Step 3:
This is the easy part, click on the icon
on the left, labeled 'IMG', and save the compilation in the BIN format. Install 'DVDDecrypter' from the CHIP DVD on the computer, run the application, insert a blank CD/DVD into the optical drive and burn the previously saved compilation onto it. In the steps that follow, we shall discuss the interface in brief. This will give you a fair idea of how to use the player. TIP:Although other burning applications may also work, we got it working with 'DVDDecrypter' in the first go.

Step 4:
Now, your bootable disc is ready with the PS2Reality player on it. Insert this disc into the PS2 and press the 'on/reset' button. Take a look at the screen shots; you will have an idea of what the interface looks like. From this point on, it's a piece of
cake. The user interface is very simple, but looks amateurish and the background music is painfully annoying. Nonetheless, you get to play DivX movies, MP3 titles and view JPEG images, so who cares what the interface looks like, anyway? Without digressing further, let us playa movie now.

The screen shots below, represent the sequential order of screens you will come across. Starting from left, on the first (blue) screen, press 'X' on the controller and select 'Load Media Player from CD-ROM'. Then you will reach the main menu (green & blue) where it will ask you to 'Play', 'Browse' and so on. If you have a boot disc integrated with the movies, then simply click on play and the movie starts playing. However, if you have inserted the boot disc without movies on it, remove it at this point-not before this- insert the disc Step 5:

It shouldn't take you very long to get used to the interface. By now, you might know your way around the interface. On further exploration, you will find that you can use the controller for much more than just 'Play' and 'Pause'. See the box 'Controls', you'll have a fair idea. The interface allows you to change the aspect ratio of the movie in real time and there are loads of other options waiting to be explored.

It is not just movies that the PS2reality player can play, when browsing, you can also select and play the MP3 tracks loaded on the CD/DVD. However, when we tried playing MP3 files from a DVD, it did not work, so we had to copy the MP3 files to a CD-ROM, it then worked perfeetly fine. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and make the most of your PlayStation 2. Enjoy
