Dear Dr CHIP, How can I delete a USB drive (or a particular USB device's) hardware signature from a machine running Windows XP and/or Windows Vista? Can it be found in the registry or is there any other place these signatures can be deleted from?

In order to show installed devices that are not currently connected to the comR'uter in the 'Device Manager', you will need to follow these steps.Click 'Start I All Programs I Accessories I Command Prompt'. In Command Prompt, type the following command and then press [Enter]: 'set devrngr show nonpresent devicesl' Then type 'start devrngrnt.rnsc' and press [Enter] to open the 'Device Manager'.
Now you will be able to see all the disconnected USB and other hardware devices in the Device Manager. You can safely delete each one even if they are not connected (shown in grey).
Note: Sometimes in the 'Device Manager' you might have to click on 'View I Show hidden devices' in case you cannot view the disconnected hardware devices.
