Can someone please help me with the right direction for fixing my problem?

I also want to backup my one laptop's data and applications to external USB drive, and then make use of that USB drive to bootup with another laptop. Is there any kind of shareware for making this probable without difficulty? I am also trying to replace the laptops but it did not require giving up all the applications and data on the old laptop!
