Is it really necessary to click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Notification Area when using a USB memory key? Although I have never bothered, a friend told me that it was very important.

Using Safely Remove Hardware is a good idea for USB keys because it avoids the risk of losing information.
Sometimes, often for reasons best known only to itself, Windows will delay writing information to external.devices like a USB key, waiting until a quieter moment instead.
The idea is that it can then get on with more pressing jobs in the meantime. If you remove the USB key during this period, this information will be lost.
It is possible to tell Windows not to delay writing in this way but it is far better to use the icon because it will make absolutely sure that the key is not in use.
The Safely Remove Hardware icon also checks to make sure that there are no files open on the USB memory key. If there are any unsaved changes when you remove a memory key without warning, files can be damaged.
