Address Mask

Address mask mainly determines the network ID bits and host ID bits. Network ID and host ID has their unique representation. In this representation bit 1 represents the network ID and bit 0 represents the host ID.Mask is simply a screen of numbers that tells you which numbers to look at underneath. Address mask is represented by four bits octets as in the IP address (An octet is an 8 bit binary number equivalent to a decimal to a decimal number in the range O 255). The position of address mask keeps on changing according to IP class' address. The following table shows the class C address 192.15.28.16 with address mask 255.255.255.0 in both decimal and binaryform.
