Now, before we get connected to the Internet using the Shortcut to vsnl icon, it is better to close the Network Connections window. To close this window, undertake the following steps;

1. Click the left mouse-button on the Close button (x) of the Network Connections window. Instantly, the window closes.

2. Now move the mouse-pointer over the Shortcut to vsnl icon displayed on the Desktop and double-click the left mouse-button. Instantly, a Connect vsnl box appears on the screen.

3. In this box, move the mouse-pointer over the Dial button and CliCk the left mouse-button on it. Another box called Connecting vsnl with a ringing sound appears on the screen. The ringing sound indicates that your computer is getting ready to get connected to the Internet service provider, i.e. VSNL.

4. Once you are connected, a box called Post-Dial Terminal Screen appears on your computer.

5. Your screen now looks similar to Fig.IN-B. Every user is uniquely identified on the Net by using an identity code. This identity code is called the username. For connecting to the Net, the username has to be entered first. So, typethe username. In we have typed our username You should enter your username that you would like to have for your Net connection. Next. pressthe Enter key. Instantly, the cursor jumps to .the next line, that is Password.

6. Every user having a username is assigned a password. Now type in a password of your choice and then press the Enter key. Write down your username and password in your diary so that you should not forget them. You will need to enter the username and password whenever you intend to access the Internet.

If you type in the wrong password, you won't be able to get connected to the Internet. And, a message gets displayed on the screen saying UsernamelPassword Incorrect, as. Now try again. Type your username and password correctly and press the Enter key again.

7. After entering the username and password, move the mouse-pointer over the Continue[F7] button present on the Post-Dial Terminal Screen and click the left mousebutton. Immediately, a Connecting to vsnl box appears on your screen with the message Status: Verifying US8' name and password.

After a few seconds, another message appears in the Connecting to vsnl box saying Logging on to network .

Within a few seconds, the Connecting to vsnl box appears displaying some information like time taken by your computer to log on to the Internet, speed of your modem, etc.click on the OK button. The box disappears from the screen and turns into an icon on the left side of the clock present on the Taskbar.

8. Now you have to open a browser, Intemet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. We will open the Internet Explorer which comes in-built with Windows XP. To do so, double-click on the Intemet Explorer icon present on the Desktop. Immediately, the Home page of Internet Explorer gets displayed on your screen.

9. From this Home page, you can visit many other web pages linked to it. Actually, every Home page topic has a corresponding web page. You just have to click on the topic to open its page. For example, if you wish to display the current news on the screen, click on the News hyperlink, as shown in. Instantly, the News page gets displayed before.
