Default I could access the internet

I use a notebook computer at home connected to the internet via my wireless broadband router. So that I could access the internet while away from home I bought a mobile internet dongle.

Unfortunately, when connected with this device I can only receive emails. If I try to send emails via Outlook with my mobile connection I get the following error message:

'The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server. Server response: '554 Sorry, your non-local IP address is not allowed to send e-mail via me.'.

The problem is that the computers used to send emai s provided by Internet Service Providers (normally known as SMTP servers) will only accept communication with computers connected to the internet from their service. If you want to send a message using Vsnl's servers you need to be connected to the internet with Vsnl, otherwise the messages are refused. The idea behind this policy is that it reduces the amount of spam on the internet.

There are two ways to get around this limitation when connected on the move whether it is with a mobile internet dongle or connected to a hotspot. The easiest is to use a webmail interface to access the email account. These are normally provided by ISPs free of charge, but you may have to ask for the exact address ifit is not obvious.

The other solution is to use an alternative SMTP server without this restriction and the easiest way to do this is to sign up for a Googlemail account. The email will still appear to come from the other address and it will work regardless of which connection you use.
In Microsoft Outlook, click on the Tools menu and then on Email Accounts. Select 'View or change existing e-mail accounts' and then click on Next. Left click on the email account and account that mayor may not be required for other providers. Click on the Advanced tab and select the option 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' underneath the text 'Outgoing server (SMTP)' and change the number in the text box to the right to 465. Click on OK and then on Test Account Settings to make sure everything is working as it should. When you are satisfied, cl ick on the Next button and then on Finished.

Mozilla Thunderbird can also be set up in this way and is much simpler if you use multiple email addresses because the same outgoing mail settings are used for all email accounts; the steps above must be followed for every email account individually.

Click on the Tools menu and 'then select Account Settings. Click on the 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' option in the left-hand column. Click on the Add button and fill out the information. Don't forget to change the port number and SSL option for Googlemail. Don't worry that there is no box for the password. Thunderbird will ask for this the first time it tries to send email and there is the option to save the password.
