The applet was initially a reference to a small Java program that is embedded in a Web page and in general refers to any application that is sufficiently small and usually runs within a Web browser. Applets usually are not allowed to access system resources-files or devices (modems, printers, scanners, etc.)-as a security precaution against anyone trying to maliciously take over the local computer.
