Change the defaults
Most routers by default come with a username like "admin" and no pass- word. If you don't change the defaults, anyone on the network could take over as admin.
Stop the broadcast

Your wireless network's name, the ssm (service set identifier), is broad cast to make it easier for devices to get access. Turn off the broadcast. It's not a foolproof precaution, but it keeps nontechie neighbors off your LAN. Filter the big MAC
Every network device has a MAC (me¬dia access control) address. You can tell the router to allow only devices you specify. Also not foolproof, but it doesn't hurt.

WPA it good
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is the best encryption there is for securing a Wi- Fi connection. If you have a router and device that support Wi-Fi Pro¬tected Setup (WPS), which automates the creation of encryption keys, even better.

Tunnel for safety
A third-party product like JiWire's Hotspot Helper nO-day free trial, creates a VPN connection from your laptop to the Internet when you are using public Wi-Fi, so spies can't steal your data from the air.
