TightVNC is a free cross-platform Virtual Network Computing client that allows you to connecting one com¬puter to another computer from anywhere, provided both have Internet connections. The reason we're not using XP's Remote Desktop to connect our computers is because TightVNC allows file transfers, and can be set to use high compression levels for better performance over slower Internet connections-very important in India.

During your install, remember to tick the 'Associate .vnc files with TightVNC Viewer' checkbox. After installation, port 5900 (default; this is configurable) is used for VNC requests. If you're behind a wireless router, remember to configure your 'Port Forwarding' on the same port.

To start TightVNC as a Windows service, go to Start > Programs > TightVNC > Launch TightVNC Server. You will need to run it as a service to make sure that it starts when your box is turned on, so as to do away with the need for a monitor. You will also need it on the computer that you will use to connect to your download box.

Change the passwords in the 'Current User Properties' window for security reasons. This comes in handy when you want to remotely check the status of your download box. Clicking OK, and then Apply, and the client will be minimised to the system tray.
