Diaries and wall calendars are used by many of us to mark a date and note down an important event. The flexibility of the computer then drew people into calendar applications, where more than one appointment could be noted. Events could even be categorized and viewed in configurable ways, with to-do lists that had display audible reminders, and so on. Mozilla Sunbird does all this commendably well, and goes on to add facilities such as searching entries, synchronizing the calendar with online calendar services, and sharing calendars online to let relevant person know your schedule or for them to request an appointment for a block download ready-made calendars with lists of holidays, company schedules, etc. Most of " . what you see on screen is customizable

Its open source and standards-based nature inspires trust, and has won a lot of users because of the absence of a comparable and free desktop application. Yes, there is Google Calendar but it is a web application meant to be used online despite the existence of Google Gears. With Sunbird, MS Outlook gets competition and proponents of free office software, who hitherto did not have a sufficiently stable or full-featured calendaring application, now have a real choice.
